Enable Sharing for Windows XP/Vista

How do you share a folder in Windows that can be viewed with the WD TV Live?

 

 

Important Notes:

Western Digital always recommends updating your OS to the latest available update or service pack.

Depending on your network's configuration you may need to disable or adjust your Firewall settings in order for your shared folder to be visable on your network. Please contact your Firewall manufacturer for assistance doing this.

 
To view the contents of a shared folder on the WDTV Live...
 
  • Turn on the unit.
  • Assuming the drive is properly configured for your network, select Video and then select Network Shares to view a list of your devices with shared folders.
  • Select your device and than select the folder you wish to access.
  • If it asks for a log in and password use the remote to set these fields to an authorized account on that device.

 

 

Sharing a Folder on Windows XP

 

Follow the instructions below to share a folder within Windows XP.

 

  1. Right click on the folder you want to share and select Sharing and Security.

  2. Select the Share this folder radial button.

  3. Choose a name you want the folder to appear as on your network and enter it in the Share Name field.

    Note: You can also set a maximum number of users able to access your drive at one time. To do this select the "Allow this number of users: " radial and set the number in the field to the right.

  4. Click "Ok". Your folder is now shared.

Sharing a Folder on Windows Vista

 

Follow the instructions below to share a folder in Windows Vista.

 

  1. Navigate to the folder you want to share. Once found right click on the folder and select Share.

  2. If your system requires a login be required to access a shared folder select a User account to assign to the share and than click Share. Otherwise simply click the Share button.

  3. Under Sharing and Discovery expand the Public folder sharing field.

  4. Depending on your system speed you may or may not see a progress bar while the permissions on the folder are updated.

  5. Click Done.

Allowing a Folder To Be Shared On Windows Vista

 

Follow the instructions below to configure your computer to allow folders to be shared in Windows Vista.

 

  1. Open the Network And Sharing Center from your Control Panel.

  2. Next to the name of the network look to see if it is a Private or Public network.

     

  3. If your network is Private skip to step 5 below. Otherwise click on the Customize link.

     

  4. Select the Private radial and than click OK.

  5. If it is set to Off expand the File Sharing field and Change it to On.

     

  6. If you want to share the pre-designated Public folders in windows, expand the Public folder sharing field under Sharing and Discovery.

  7. Select your choice of the two "Turn on sharing..." radials.

     

  8. Click Apply.
